Basic SEO tools: Google Search Console and Google Analytics

Many people believe that optimization and positioning is a difficult task that consumes a lot of time and money. Due to this unjustified fear, we often give up the strategy, and this is a big mistake regardless of what page we run: private blog, company website, online store. Therefore, today we will try to dispel all doubts about the essence of SEO, and we will also propose free and easy-to-use tools straight from Google.

SEO – nothing to be afraid of!

Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving the visibility and ranking of a website or web page in search engine results pages. The higher a website or web page ranks in the SERPs, the more likely it is to be visited by users. SEO encompasses both:

  • on-page optimization can take place at any point during the development of a site, but it’s typically undertaken at the same time as initial development work.
  • off-page optimization refers to tactics that attempt to improve rankings for websites through linking strategies with other sites across different types of media.

If you want to make sure your website is following all the rules set by Google, then you need to use White Hat SEO techniques. This includes optimizing your website for search engines using keyword research, backlinking, and other methods that focus on providing a great user experience. Black Hat SEO techniques, on the other hand, are more interested in tricking search engines into giving your website a higher ranking. These include spamming social media sites with links or flooding comment sections with spammy posts. These tactics might work at first, but eventually these websites will be penalized or de-indexed altogether.

How Google works?

Google processes over 40,000 search queries every second, which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide. The majority of these searches are done through the Google search engine, but the company also offers a wide variety of other products and services.

If you want to improve your website’s ranking in Google search results, you need to understand how Google ranks websites. And that ranking is based on a lot of factors, some of which you can control.  These are called on-page optimization factors and they include things like keyword usage, use of the H1 tag, page length, content quality etc. Then there are off-page factors such as links from other websites and social media shares. To track all these factors, you’ll need two tools – Google Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools) and Google Analytics. Together, these will give you an idea of how well your site performs in both areas.

Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free service offered by Google that helps you monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your site’s presence in search results. You can use it to see how often your site appears in  searches, which keywords are driving traffic to your site, and how well your site is performing in terms of click-through rate and position in search results.

You can check there indexing status and optimize visibility of their websites. You can find out which keywords are associated with your site, and how well your site ranks for those keywords. Additionally, you can submit sitemaps to Google to help them index your website more effectively. The final component of Google Search Console is the crawl error page – this page will give you an overview of errors from crawlers as they try to access your site. It’s also possible to filter by certain types of errors if there are too many shown at once.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic, currently as a platform within the Google Marketing Platform brand. Google launched the service in November 2005. 

Google Analytics is a great tool for understanding your website traffic. You can see how many people are visiting your site, where they’re coming from, what pages they’re looking at, and more. This information can be used to improve your website and attract more visitors. One of the most useful features of Google Analytics is the ability to see which keywords are bringing people to your site. It’ll show you the top five organic search results that are sending traffic to your site. From there you can see how much organic search traffic each of those sources is sending and work on ranking higher in those areas.

Track all the data!

If you want to get serious about improving your website’s SEO, you need to start using Google Search Console and Google Analytics. These two tools are essential for understanding how your site is performing in the search engines and where you need to make improvements.  
Of course, you can’t pretend that no other tools exist. The most recommended and unflagging popularity include Ahrefs, Semrush, Senuto and Screaming Frog. Find out more about them.
